Midnight. Security at Blue Spar is a trio of guys who make their rounds with the lumbering enthusiasm of lifers who know the inside of the fence is as good as their lives are going to get. It's tempting to spice up their evening, but I catch myself. My boredom isn't their problem.
I ghost through a door in the back of the main building. There will be camerasâthree guys can't cover eight buildingsâand sure enough, I spot one, clamped to the wall like a wart. It has a fixed field of view. A toddler in a padded walking trainer could slip past it.
There are six more scattered throughout the main floor. All looking in one direction. I could bring an entire dance company through there and no one would notice.
I had spent the afternoon looking into Blue Spar's financials and business dealings. They were a commercial shipping company who did a lot of business with overseas manufacturing. Mostly construction materials and the rest was cheap crap. Knock offs. Seen on TV merchandise. Mall kiosk filler. Flavor of the month health and beauty products. The list was long and boring.
I went looking for building plans instead and found enough to suggest that the main building had administrative offices. Following the plan I had memorized, I locate the security office. It's always good to know where the goons are eating donuts. I'm surprised to find another pair parked in the office, watching the monitors. Okay, so five knuckle-draggers. Not three. And one of them looks like he's actually paying attention to the screens. Ugh. Motivated hourly wage earners are the worst.
I crawl past the office and take the stairs to the upper floor where the boss's office is located. The door is locked, but the panel is flimsy. All it takes is a jiggle and a thump to pop the door. Inside, the room is tastefully decorated (for a shipping magnate who has offices in the Valley, I mean; it wasn't that classy). It's a Take a Meeting and Look Important room. There aren't any filing cabinets and the computer on his desk is an after-thought. I can't imagine Boss Man typing in all those product SKUs for hair weaves and plastic clogs.
A couple of bottles of single malt whisky are stashed in the sideboard. I pour an inch into a tumbler and sip it as I examine the huge oil painting hanging on the opposite wall.
The Scotch is pretty good. I leave the bottle on the sideboard, thinking I might take it with me. After I crack the safe behind the painting, of course.
How did I know there was a safe? There's always a safe in the Take a Meeting and Look Important rooms. It's mandatory decor.
The painting is a ginormous snowscape. It's at least six feet long and a couple of feet high. There's a building in the foreground that I feel like I should recognize, but either the artist wasn't very good or they had taken a lot of liberties.
